An inspirational school has been hailed by Michael Gove after receiving an excellence award at the House of Commons.

Newall Green Primary School in Wythenshawe is only the fifth school in the country to take home the prestigious gong, which recognises social inclusion.

The school is one of the largest primary schools in Manchester with 670 pupils.

One in three children have extra learning needs.

Staff were honoured for offering pupils the highest possible standard of care.

Judges found teachers regularly go above and beyond their duties, in some cases buying youngsters shoes, dresses for school discos and offering boxes of food to hungry families.

Education Secretary Mr Gove said: “It’s absolutely right that we celebrate schools like Newall Green Primary that are benefiting the most disadvantaged children in their care.”
